Bennett under fire for ‘black baby’ comments

September 30th, 2005

Radio talkshow host and Republican bigshot Bill Bennett is in all kinds of trouble for remarks he made on his radio program Wednesday. Here’s what Bennett said:

But I do know that it’s true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could - if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down. That would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down.

The remarks came in the context of a discussion Bennett was having with a caller over whether Social Security will remain solvent with the country aborting so many babies who would be future contributors to the program.

The White House has criticized Bennett for his comments, and, as expected, Democrats are up in arms.

Bennett argues that he was making an outlandish hypothesis to prove a point.

“You put things up in order to examine them,” Bennett said on “Hannity and Colmes” last night. “I put it up, examined it, and said that is ridiculous and impossible no matter who advances that idea.”
