The Office: New season starts tonight
September 27th, 2007What’s the apostrophe for?
September 27th, 2007Great column by Clay Travis about UK football, especially the part about Andre’ Woodson, or the man with “an apostrophe after his name for no reason.”
Can you imagine how tough it was for Woodson to get down the rules for possessives in elementary school when he already had an apostrophe after his name? How many nights did he lie awake at night staring at the ceiling because his story about Andre’’s toys had come back riddled with red ink over the presumed excessive possessive? What about his fellow classmates? I guarantee you right now there are a ton of Andre’’s classmates who still have no idea when to use an apostrophe. For the record, my friend Tardio claims this apostrophe is there because Woodson “preemptively owns everything.”
Does God want women to stay home?
September 26th, 2007Mary Zeiss Strange writes in USA Today about Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s new degree program with a concentration in homemaking. As you might expect, she doesn’t like it.
This isn’t to diminish the homemaker’s importance — Martha gets to play a prominent role in the Gospel of John’s story of the raising of Lazarus. And it must be noted that Southwestern’s program is specifically geared toward “women whose heart and calling is the home.” But surely the seminarians would be truer to women’s biblical roots were they to recognize, as their savior did, that there is more than one career path open to women.
Talk about some faulty logic. Because the seminary is offering a homemaking program in response to interest from potential students, that equates to the school telling women that homemaking is the only option for them?
If a university launched a law school, would Strange accuse the institution of suggesting that the only career option available for students is as an attorney? Of course not. And yet she doesn’t hesitate to make that same criticism when it comes to a homemaking program.
Young children losing the habit of reading with their parents
September 26th, 2007Children of primary school age spend more time on their own or playing with friends than they do in the company of their parents, according to research published today. Even mealtimes are squeezed into as little time as possible so that children can leave the table and watch television or play with their toys.
Update: School district fires vegan teacher
September 26th, 2007The loony vegan school teacher I posted about previously has been fired by the school district where he taught.
The school board vote was, of course, unanimous.

OSU’s Mike Gundy vs. The Oklahoman
September 25th, 2007Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy didn’t like this column by The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson. So after Saturday’s game, he let her and everyone else know about it:
If you have any problems watching the video, you can also see it here.

New stories on BP Sports
September 25th, 2007A boy named Wrigley
September 24th, 2007This poor kid. He’s been scarred for life.
His parents say he can go by his middle name when he’s old enough to decide.
For now, the newborn will be known by his first name: Wrigley.
And his last name: Fields.
His parents are Paul and Teri Fields of Michigan City, Ind. They are — no surprise — fans of the Cubs, who have played at Wrigley Field since 1916. The Fields planned the name for years before their son’s birth.
The parents should be charged with child abuse.
John Piper on his granddaughter
September 24th, 2007John Piper writes about his granddaughter Felicity who was stillborn Sept. 22. I wept as I read it, and can’t imagine what that kind of pain is like. For some reason, God in His grace has spared my family from experiencing it. I thank Him for that, and pray that He will be a source of comfort to the Piper family during this trial.

Huckabee interview update
September 21st, 2007Back in April, I reported that presidential candidate Mike Huckabee had agreed to an e-mail interview with me. I asked you to submit questions, and you did. I read through your submitted questions, chose the ones I wanted to use and submitted them to Alice Stewart of the Huckabee campaign on May 15.
I was told that the interview was placed on the to-do list, and that they would have it for me ASAP. I’ve sent a couple of follow-up e-mails since then — I sent the last one on Sept. 10 — and am still waiting to receive the Governor’s responses to the questions. I realize that things are hectic in a presidential campaign, so I’m not terribly surprised at the delay.
Just wanted to give you an update on where things stood, since some folks have asked me about it. At this point I don’t know if it’s going to happen or not. If and when it does, I’ll certainly post the interview.
