Explain this to me

October 29th, 2008

From the World Series tonight. Top of the eighth, Tampa Bay down 4-3. Carl Crawford leads off the inning with a single. B.J. Upton then proceeds to swing at the first pitch and grounds into a 6-4-3 double play.

Why on earth would Upton swing at the first pitch in that situation? If you’ve got someone on first base with the speed of Crawford,  shouldn’t you work the count a little bit to give him a chance to steal second?

Incredibly stupid. It’s like some of these guys don’t have a clue about any kind of strategy whatsoever.
