Dobson weighs in on presidential hopefuls

March 29th, 2007

From U.S.News & World Report:

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson appeared to throw cold water on a possible presidential bid by former Sen. Fred Thompson while praising former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is also weighing a presidential run, in a phone interview Tuesday.

“Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said of Thompson. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression,” Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party’s conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.

  1. Larry F. says:

And so by inference, we should assume Dobson think’s Gingrich IS a Christian?

  2. I personally hope Thompson runs. I feel a connection with him.

  3. Peter R. says:

All three of the Democrat front-runners are Christians, do you suppose Dobson approves of them as well?

  4. Jennifer says:

It’s really said that Dobson is praising Gingrich. Whatever happened to church discipline? Is Gingrich even a member of a church anywhere? I would hope he has been excommunicated by now, given how he treated his exwives. Surely Dobson wouldn’t hire Gingrich to work for Focus, or tolerate his behavior in his own organization; why recommend him to lead the nation? I live in Atlanta and the things I have heard about Newt’s personal life over the years are pitiful, to say the least, and I won’t be voting for him. He’s clearly manipulating Dobson for poilitical purposes. Dobson really needs to stick to family affairs; he is losing more and more credibility in the political arena with a lot of us. It really is about power, isn’t it, not the gospel.

    Amen Jennifer.

These days, the line is blurring between political and family. Just ask Prison Fellowship who are in court trying to reverse a court order to shut down their IFI program.

  7. I got an email today from a Fred Thompson website saying that they have discussed this more thoroughly with Dobson’s people and he claims that the conversation was misrepresented. Is that true? I don’t know, but that is what Dobson’s people are saying.

  8. Anyone got a quote from Dobson a few years back that revealed his unbiblical attitude towards the political process? I can’t remember where I read or heard it.

Sadly, I think Dobson is corrupted by Washington rather than seasoned by grace.

  9. Newman says:

I agree Klay, I know some people who get very defensive when I make statements like yours in a conversation. I don’t know why people follow his political GOP rhetoric when obviously they have done very little.
