NBC draws protests from conservatives
September 26th, 2006NBC is making waves among evangelical conservatives for two things:
1. Removing any religious references in “VeggieTales,” which is now airing on Saturday mornings.
2. The proposed broadcast of a Madonna concert that includes a crucifixion scene.
Yesterday, Albert Mohler wrote about censoring Bob the Tomato.
The censoring of Bob the Tomato is an indication that “God” may well be the most controversial word spoken on television.
Sorry about that Bob. NBC fears that Bob the Tomato is a zealot — a clever televangelist seducing children with his radical theology of God’s love — and with his theology made less threatening by his vegetable charm. Larry the Cucumber was evidently unavailable for comment.
Sounds like a job for Larry Boy.
Did anyone watch 60 Sunset Strip or whatever the title is of that new NBC “Saturday Night Live behind the scenes show” from Sorkin? Wow; they just didn’t hide any hostility toward Christians at all. I kept waiting for some kind of mollification but finally just flipped over to another channel. It was pretty disconcerting, esp. knowing about the concerns that the network had about Veggie-Tales.
Which is worse, the network wanting to censor the show or the Christians who produce it being willing to let them in order to get their show on network TV?
Veggie Tales is no longer owned by the original owners. They had little or no control over this situation with NBC. Phil Vischer explains the entire story at philvischer.com.

60 sunset strip will be cancelled. It was stupid and pretentious.
Who cares about what might be going on in the lives of people who work a job like Saturday night live? I don’t.
The first thing I thought when I saw Tim’s post was Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. As GEN-O said, it is hostile toward Christianity. Both episodes so far have found a way to bash conservative Christianity, all the while one of the main characters is supposedly a devout Christian. The only problem is that she doesn’t act very Christlike very often, giving the impression that Hollywood knows what a Christian should and shouldn’t be like. But unfortunately, lj, I think the show is actually going to do very well. I may be wrong, but it apparently did well in the 18-49 demographic, enough to plunge it into the #2 spot at it’s time slot. So we might be seeing it for a while unless ABC can step up and give tv another Lost or Grey’s Anatomy at that same time.
Seems to me we all should find our inner child and watch lots of violent TV then fight fire with fire and blame our actions on them! Its the perfect plan! I think I saw it on Pinky and the Brain.
Yeah so Christianity is OK if it can be portrayed negatively: “Book of Daniel” or “Studio 60″. But to say that “God made you special and loves you”? Sorry, we can’t do that. We wouldn’t want to offend anyone…except Christians I guess.
How twisted.
Like the West Wing, this show has a thinly veiled agenda. But here’s the real problem: it was boring with a banal script. Rubbish.
And this from a blogger with “banal” in his sub title.
I think Zoner knows banal.
And as Zoner Gump would assert, “Momma says that banal is as banal does”.
