Pat’s predictions
January 3rd, 2008You’ve undoubtedly been awaiting with great anticipation the annual predictions from Pat Robertson, which he claims are inspired by God. So, for 2008, Pat says we’re in for a lot of worldwide violence, a U.S. recession and a stock market crash by 2010.
Quite the cheery chap, isn’t he?
“The Lord was saying that there’s going to be violence and chaos in the world,” Robertson said on his “700 Club” news-and-talk show.
“We’ve just begun to see what’s going to happen, and the nations are going to be convulsed with violence,” he said, citing as an example unrest in Pakistan after the death of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Pat’s track record on these predictions is, shall we say, less than stellar — as Religion News Service points out. (For some reason, the RNS permalinks aren’t working, so this link takes you to the main page. To see their entire post, look for the one entitled “Pat’s Picks.”)
In 2007, he said the U.S. would be hit by a “major terrorist attack… The Lord didn’t say nuclear. But I do believe it will be something like that.” Robertson said God told him during a recent prayer retreat that major cities and possibly millions of people will be affected by the attack, which should take place sometime after September.
In 2006, Robertson said the coasts of America, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, will be lashed by storms. 2006 was unusual, say scientists, in that no major hurricanes made landfall in the U.S. In general, it was a very slow year for storms.
In 2005, Roberts said:”What I heard is that Bush is now positioned to have victory after victory and that his second term is going to be one of triumph, which is pretty strong stuff.” Bush’s approval ratings hover at less than 30 percent; I haven’t seen any great triumphs yet. You?
But old Pat keeps hacking away.
Wouldn’t this make him a false prophet then?
What of the people who still keep sending this guy money?
Fools and their money are soon parted as the saying goes. These are the people who keep Pat on the air.
“The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly.” Proverbs 15:14
Let’s see — violence in the world. Well, duh.
U.S. recession. It will happen eventually. The economy follows cycles of boom and bust.
Stock market crash — define crash. From early 2000 to late 2002 the Dow lost about 40 percent of its value. If that’s not a crash, what is?
Although things are looking up for Bush’s policies (i.e., the Iraq war) by now, 2006 was a terrible year for him.
It’s kind of like golf. You can duff shots all day but that one drive down the fairway will keep you coming back. One of these days, one of Pats predictions will come true. Even if he stumbles uncontrollably into the truth people will “oooh and aaahhh” about his conversations with God and how what God told him actually came true.
People who give money to causes like this never fail to amaze me. I was listening to the Family station on XM this evening on the way home. A show called the bible answer man had a caller that asked about some woman evangelist (I can’t remember her name) was telling people that God was telling her to tell the people to give $1,000.00 each. I am sure that plenty of them did.
I listen to the Bible Answer Man show a lot. Here’s the web home:

You can search their archives to see their research on doctrines held by churches & well-known people to see how it aligns with scripture - you can even contact CRI with your concerns as they study that stuff for a living.
I use to watch Hal Lindsey’s Intelligence Report. Every week he would take a headline, still does, and show how this would lead to WW III. If you are interested in learning more about the Doomsday obsession, there is a book called End-Time Visions by Richard Abanes. It documents end times prophets and cults for the last 1000 years. It’s pretty interesting. And proves true, there’s nothing new under the sun.
Thanks for the link Roger.
some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons
Lindsey is in the same class as Robertson. As are most of the dispensational premil talking heads.
