Chris Sligh voted off American Idol

March 28th, 2007

The injustice continues, as Chris Sligh got the boot tonight from American Idol while Sanjaya miraculously sticks around. It aggravates me that we’re seeing so many superior talents leaving the show, while a kid who is by far the most inferior talent of the group — and who has been for several weeks — isn’t even close to going home.

I agree that Chris Sligh is miles better than Sanjaya, but that little girl with cell phone vote goes a long way. Every season has similar injustices. Last year it was Chicken Little, before that it was John Stephens, the red headed crooner.
I’ll miss Chris. I predicted early on that he would make the top ten. I have liked him from the beginning, but he has waned in recent weeks.

Does P. T. Barnum officially qualify as a prophet now?

Now all we’re left with in the guys is a bunch of estrogen stoked tenors with moon eyes that wouldn’t know who Richard Starkey was if they saw his picture. The only half-way decent guy left is Phil, and he struggles with causing nation-wide narcolepsy. The others aren’t worth the electricity to run the TV.

Give the prize to Melinda and start over!

Could http://www.votefortheworst.com/ have anything to do with it?

Being from the greater Seattle area I can’t help but root for the local guys - Blake and Sanjaya. However, Sanjaya desperately needs to come back in five years when both he and his voice have matured. Jordin is identical in age, but the difference vocally between the two is the clichéd ‘night and day.’

Sanjaya actually possesses a good ear, decent tone and a sense of musicality - but he’s so….so timid and young and his voice is so small. To be honest, I’m not certain how he (and several other contestants) made it past the Hollywood rounds. But then again, I really questioned the judge’s decisions this year on the whole.

With the shows slow developing personalities this seasons at least the “Sanjaya” experiment has kept people talking.

I know a great deal about music, having been a musician for 30 years, and a (part time) professional performing musician for the past 20. And I don’t have a clue what sells. Like Lisa M, I question who they let through year after year, but they always seem to know what they are doing. Maybe its because its pop music, and I still don’t get pop music, or why people would buy it. Sanjaya is not half the singer that Jordin is, you’re right, but little girls with money love him, so put him on a record and get it in the stores. That’s their attitude, more about making money than making good music. Sure, Sanjaya will be a better singer in five years, but he won’t be as marketable. Bottom line, he is being used by an industry that cares little about him, only about the dollars they can make from him. They are even exploiting the publicity he is creating by making it through each week, and will continue to do so as long as America lets them.
I feel sorry for Sanjaya. He knows he is being used, but does not know what to do about it. His best shot at getting his dignity back, and really surviving for a long time in the music biz, is to stand up at the end of the next results show and say, “You know what, this person you voted off is a better singer than I am, and so I am going to bow out and let them stay in.” Then, head to the studio and get to work. That would rock, now.

It’s getting to the point where I think the producers of the show need to take it out of the public’s hand and let the judges decide who gets eliminated each week. At least until they get down to the final 10 or so. If they had done that Sanjaya would’ve been gone weeks ago.

Also, that would ensure that the most deserving people would go on tour. I’m sure the public would still make the occasional mistake once they start voting, but I would hope that by the time we’re down to 10 finalists chosen by the judges there would not be as wide a gap in talent between them as there is between the top few and bottom few we have now.

  7. The Zoner says:

It’s TV. The producers love that Sanjaya is still around.

I’m with JK. I thought Sligh wasn’t doing anything to seperate himself these last few outings. He probably made it as far as he should have.

If it truly is “Idol” than I think it’s Jordin Sparks, youthful exuberance, beauty and a big voice. And her dad played pro football!!!!

  8. Jeremy says:

Is it weird that I have still never seen an episode?

  9. Marty says:

I promise not to think you’re weird Jeremy as long as you don’t think I’m weird for never having seen an episode of 24, Lost, or Survivor.

  10. Travis says:

Is it weird that I have still never seen an episode of Idol or 24?

I have, however, never missed an episode of Lost!

  11. jasonk says:

I watched Survivor until that guy started walking around naked. That was a little much for me. Survivor is proof that CBS has a hard time handling success.

I tried to catch on to Lost, but when they were finding laptop computers, I bailed.

24 is a regular part of my week. I love it, but didn’t watch it until season 4. Idol is the same way, didn’t start watching it until season 3. Now I won’t miss it.

  12. Craig says:

I’ve been a fan of Idol, but this year has left me pretty cold. With the exception of Melinda and LaKisha, it seems to me nobody has really brought it on stage yet, even though a lot of the finalists seemed like decent singers in the auditions. I thought the final five would be the black girls (sorry, pc crowd), and two of them are gone already.

Peter Noone was right a couple weeks ago - it’s a voting contest. Pop music has always been this way, with people making it big based on looks or marketing or production and not necessarily talent. So Sanjaya may last a long time, with audiences tuning in to see the train wreck. Simon threatening to quit only helps the show. It’s archetypical TV.

  13. I just heard on the news today that Simon is threatening to quit the show if Sanjaya should happen to win this year. And I can tell you that if he does win this year, I’m never watching it again.
I bet the folks at FOX are praying he gets kicked off soon.

  14. Di says:

I’ve never seen an episode of Idol, 24, Lost OR Survivor! Or Dancing with the Stars!

    : )

  15. Simon can whine all he wants. He and the other judges have only themselves to blame for letting him through. The public is just taking advantage of their ignorance. This show is too old. Simon is the only person on the face of the earth that truly sees this as a “singing competition”(British accent implied). The best thing for some of these better singers/performers is to be voted off, case-in-point: Daughtry. The four main people on this show are making fools out of themselves this season to gain more poularity, which I hope kills it.
