Heading to Charleston
May 30th, 2006Posting will most likely be lighter than normal for the next few days, as we’re heading to Charleston, S.C. — first for vacation, then for a work-related conference. If anyone knows Charleston well and has any recommendations for restaurants, attractions, etc., I’d love to hear them.
If you haven’t been to Fort Sumter, it is right there. I went in 99 and made sure to get pictures. It’s pretty neat to be standing where the Civil War began.
Restaurant - A. W. Shucks
Attractions - Patriot’s Point, Fort Sumter (plenty of other Civil War sites as well), the Battery (where the Civil War actually began), Rainbow Row, Water-front park, beautiful historic churches, the old “slave” market, Charleston aquarium. All of these are great, just depends on your personal interests.
One I have not seen but hope to in a few weeks is the C.S.S. Huntley. (recently raised submarine)
My wife is from Charleston so I’ve been there a “time or two”.
If you do like Military History, etc. I would strongly recommend going to see the USS Yorktown (an Aircraft Carrier which fought in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam), which is right across the harbor from Ft. Sumter and the CSS Huntley. All three are quite amazing to visit. Hope you have fun on your trip!
Hey, if you get a chance, stop on by Savannah - it’s not too far. Get a taste of the true South.

Let me know what’s good!
I hear that Hardee’s makes a pretty good burger. They probably have a Hardee’s in Charleston.
I second the choice on A.W. Shucks….Also the Charleston Crab House.
If they are your taste, have the lowcountry shrimp and grits.
Also don’t miss Fort Sumter.
Poogan’s Porch - We ate there about a month ago…great stuff.
Have a great time! I forgot if you told me, are you going to the SBC?
Man, we’ll have Tim going at it for decades if he intends to go to all of our suggestions. Let’s see… I’m sure there’s an old lady in some big white house that’s a great cook. Maybe you could ring her doorbell and ask her if you could grab some grub.
Steve — Yes, I’ll be at the SBC. I’ll be home all of two days between my Charleston and Greensboro trips.
Thanks for all the suggestions thus far, guys. They are duly noted.
Haha - Tim just used the word “duly.” I don’t know why I think that’s funny - it just is.
I think they have a NASCAR thing down there somewhere- maybe you could get a tour of it and interview some of those kind of people.
I can’t believe Gordon suggested Hardees! Hardees and NASCAR- the perfect vacation combination while you ‘do the Charleston!’
Hardees and NASCAR are a perfect combination for anything (Cale Yarborough used to advertise for Hardees).
And what do you mean by “those kind of people”?
“And what do you mean by “those kind of people”?”
I simply mean those who watch the NASCAR exhibitions and eat at Hardees- not unlike those who watch the Cubbies and then go to the Cubbie Bear after the game. Can’t we go just a day- just one day without someone getting worked up over NASCAR jokes?

Although now that USA TODAY Sports Weekly has added NASCAR to its MLB and NFL coverage, who knows what might happen to this Illinois Cardinal fan who lives closer to Chicago than St. Louis?
Why is USA TODAY Sports Weekly covering NASCAR? Shouldn’t they cover sports?
EXACTLY my thoughts, Chuck!
Can’t someone just go one day without dissing NASCAR?!?!?!?
But for some reason a smiley face didn’t come up.
And there is a BIG difference between NASCAR and Cubs fans. NASCAR has a winner every week.
Well, isn’t NASCAR also considered more of a sport than Cubs baseball?
Very nice!
Cubs baseball is the first confirmed natural disaster of the year.
I think that was my first official jab at the Cubs on here. It felt good, it really did.
I don’t know where it was coming from - oh ya, wait a minute - I remember now. It must have been that wonderful sweep for the Braves over Chicago…. 8 homers in one game. Ouch.
Hey Scott– you can think up more Cubs barbs in October when both teams will be at home.
