It’s Open Blog Friday
April 11th, 2008We talked favorite Nintendo games previously. Today let’s go with top five Atari 2600 games. Here’s my list, as best as I can remember it. It’ll probably change once I see some other games listed:
1. River Raid
2. Space Invaders
3. Realsports Baseball
4. Pitfall
5. Q-bert
Gosh, that’s been a long time ago. I’m getting old.
Feel free to add your list, or to opine on any other topic you choose.
So, I’m not old enough for Atari but I think I played pitfall once.
Was anyone else suprised by “Shout the Lord” last night on American Idol. They even said My Jesus, my savior in prime time.
It was actually a really good performance.
I hate that song.
Yeah Abe, that surprised me as well. I was also surprised that Michael got the boot. He was one of my favorites.
how can you hate “Shout to the Lord”? (Are you supposed to put the title of a song in quotes, I never know)
Tim, my wife was devastated, she loved Michael.
That was entirely weird that they were all up there singing Shout to the Lord. I think I just closed my mouth now. My wife and I were totally surprised. First Dolly Parton with “Jesus and Gravity” then “Shout to the Lord”? Maybe one of the producers became a believer, or they are trying to pander.
1. Keystone Kapers
2. River Raid
3. Maze Craze
4. Pitfall
5. Mario Bros.
I didn’t watch “Idol Gives Back” on Wed., when first sang it. the local Christian radio station was amazed they would do that, as was I, but were disappointed with much of the comedy, especially Robin Williams and Ben Stiller (profanity laced and vulgar).
Major shock over Johns departing, but at this point only the best are left so we shouldn’t be too shocked.
Atari 2600 - Space Invaders, Asteroids, Missle Command, Pitfall and Frogger.
In no particular order:

Defender
Ah those were the days Heck even the game it came with Tank was pretty cool.
I am sure I will think of more as the day goes on
1. Defender (fly around in a spaceship making sure the aliens don’t pick up citizens from the city. It had a superimposed live map as well)
2. Donkey Kong
3. Mario Bros. (it is true, they were first on Atari)
4. Football (the only game I know of you could run the opposite way and show up on the other side of the screen to make the tackle.)
5. Homerun (Simply pull back on the stick when you swing and it is an automatic home run.)

I never had the 2600, I owned the 5200 version.
Top was river raid, burned out at least 3 controlers with that game.

River Raid was impressive. Didn’t the programmers only have 4k of memory to work with in the atari 2600? Kudos to them. I can’t believe they programmed any game with those kinds of limitations!
1. river raid
2. space invaders (put atari on the map)
3. chopper command
4. freeway (ok, so I loved activision games)
5. pacman (pretty lame version, but it was the first home version of the arcade game, so it was cool to us)
ps - and now for a totally unrelated story. Check out this feel good story of the week:

All the activision games ruled. Kaboom, Megalomania, River Raid, Pitfall…
I knew I would remember some more.
Barnstorming
Boxing
Burgertime
Jungle Hunt
I also had an Intlevision system that had some neat games also anyone else have that system?
Sorry, men, this discussion concerns subject material entirely before my time. However, I do enjoy hearing old war stories from long retired vets, so list away gentlemen. Remind me of a time when 8 colors and 64 pixels was all that was needed for great gaming!
>I also had an Intlevision system that had some neat games also anyone else have that system?
My cousin had one - I was always borrowing it!
It was my favorite (until the commodore 64 came along). Intellivision actually had a 16 bit processor in it (when everybody else had 4 or 8 bit). The games were great - basketball, bowling, football, baseball. I just hated that controller though.
Tim, there’s no way that you can have a discussion of the top Atari games without including Dig Dug. Not only was it one of the best games, (my other faves being Pitfall, Indy 500, Circus Atari, and Donkey Kong), but it’s also one of the most collectable today.
Good call Roger the controller did stink.
Good call Chad Dig Dug was great.
Enduro
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Adventure
Yars Revenge
Kaboom
1. Donkey Kong
2. Yar’s Revenge
3. Pitfall
4. Burger Time
5. E.T. (just kidding)
We had an Intelevision as well, but it overheated and died because someone forgot to unplug it!
Ah yes, I forgot about Megalomania. The flying hamburgers on the second stage was the best. The farthest I ever got was three full levels into it.
