  1. What is the air speed volocity of an unladen swallow?

  2. misawa says:

Trivia question: name the three items in the ark of the convenant.

  3. Usually when I swallow there are either liquids or foods involved, so I don’t really worry about air speed velocity.

  4. http://www.nature.com/news/2006/060522/full/060522-15.html

  5. Chuck says:

The air speed volocity of an unladen swallow varies with the wing length, body mass, wind, and any other varying aspect involved with the particular event. But based on averages for an unladen swallow the ASV = 11 meters per second or 24 miles per hour.

  6. In your scenario Mr. Cloud the velocity of your swallow (food and I’m assuming in your case whiskey) is directly proportional to the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow. Thus, the calculated portion would give you the exact velocity of your swallow as it relates to the gravitational pull of the moon and the ever changing magnetic pole.

  7. Brett says:

“I said na na na na”

  8. Chuck says:

The items in the Ark of the Covenant are:

The two stone tablets of the Law
    Aaron’s rod that budded
the golden pot of hidden manna

  9. Spell Covenant

    J/K misawa

  10. Chuck says:

Tyler - don’t I get a prize for providing the correct answer. Tim gave out a book last Friday for correct trivia answers.

  11. Chuck, the national laboratory for Aves research, did research this back in the spring of 1994. Their deduction was similar to yours with the exception of a modified body mass average equation (BMAE). They also discovered that a variance in magnetic pull from electronics and other techno advanced devices played a tremendous role in the ASV of the swallow. Apparently the high iron content in the blood of the said swallow causes the blood feathers to distort thus giving rapid fluctuations its ASV.

  12. misawa says:

Chuck, you get 1000 points. Spend them well.

Steve - Covenent; ten yeers of school and i’m startning to figure out this speling think.

  13. I’ll give you this secret link for coming close. Nice try Chuck!

  14. Jason says:

    “na na na na”

  15. Tyler, you know what they say about “assume”, don’t you?

  16. Brett says:

Jason, I think you got it…

    …artist and song?

  17. Yes I have heard what they say, Gordon. Sometimes when used correctly it makes for good comedy.

  18. Chuck says:

    Steam - Kiss Him Goodbye

  19. Brett says:

    Chuck,

    Strike one.

  20. Jason says:

    MJ PYT?

  21. Marty says:

Here’s what my weekend plans involve. I’m going to find a blog with which I have absolutely nothing in common with the people who post there. Then I shall read through their recent discussions, become offended, and post a message rebuking them for their intolerant opinions. Several people seem to be doing that with Tim’s blog lately so it must be fun!!

  22. Brett says:

    Ding…Ding…Ding! We have a winner!

Jason wins the 80s flashback tune trivia on Open Blog Friday!

    Michael Jackson, Pretty Young Thing.

    Thanks for playing everyone!

Tune in again next week when we again reminisce a couple decades back to the undisputed peak of music in the history of mankind!

  23. Brett says:

    Marty,

Better yet, let’s about 10 of us show up unexpectedly on such a blog and ambush them!

  24. Brett says:

Breaking news…shots fired in the Capitol building…

  25. Chuck says:

Someone thought they heard shots fired in a garage near the Capitol Building. They are speculating that it was probably a car backfiring or balloons popping.

  26. Well, Tyler, for you to assume that I am imbibing seems to be comedic to me. (We probably should be discussing this privately).

  27. Chuck says:

Now on Rush I just heard that two Ladies came running out of the building saying a man with a gun was in the gym. Who knows at this point????

  28. Scott Gladin says:

I also heard someone was brought out on a stretcher… I didn’t know a balloon could be lethal.

  29. Chuck says:

It can be if swallowed. Well, depending on its air speed volocity.

  30. Chuck says:

The lady brought out on the stretcher was suffering from anxiety related health problems.

  31. Brett says:

…or she saw this as her opportunity for five minutes of fame.

  32. Chuck says:

Did anyone else see where a judge said a 5′1″ man was too short to go to prison for a child sex offense? How ridiculous!!!

  33. Scott Gladin says:

Where/when was this, Chuck? (”too short to go to prison”)

  34. Chuck says:

It was on the news and internet yesterday. I’ts on msnbc.msn.com under “Probation for short sex offender sparks debate”. I would have posted the link here, but I don’t know how to do that.

  35. Chuck says:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12986871/

  36. Scott Gladin says:

Wow, that’s just insane. Our legal system has some serious issues.

  37. Jim Toms says:

Tyler, would that be an African or European swallow?

  38. Tim says:

But then again, African swallows are not migratory.

  39. What? I don’t know the answer to that! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  40. Chris says:

Since the air speed velocity and modified body mass average equation of a swallow have been discussed, I think it’s time we examine whether a herring’s skeleton posesses the necessary bone density to withstand the task of chopping down the tallest tree in the forest. All who approve this topic, say “aye”; all oppose, say “Ni”… er, “nay”…

  41. Jeremy says:

Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries!

  42. misawa says:

Braves win 6-5 over the Cubs. Zambrano had a no hitter through the 6th.

Just in case Tim’s day wasn’t going well.

  43. Thank you, Neifi Perez.

  44. At the end of the season, Jack Bauer is tied up by the ChiComs but Sayeed is poised to kick some major “Others” tail. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Go Braves!

  45. Scott Gladin says:

Wow, I’ve decided y’all have issues.
And, I’m very sorry Cubs fans (not really, :) ). Go Braves!

  53. To provide for the common defense by requiring all persons in the United States, including women, between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

    http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c109:H.R.4752:

  54. Scott Gladin says:

I personally don’t agree with that whatsoever. The Military is voluntary - the way it should be. If the government begins to dictate who will be forced to serve - similar to the draft - , won’t that be going against everything this country stands for? What freedom would our armed forces be fighting for if that were to happen?
I’m not really worried that people would, in essence, stop joining. Brave souls have voluntary put their lives on the line for years, I don’t see why that would end now.

  55. “Rangel opposes war with Iraq and seeks to make the point that many soldiers are volunteers from low-income and minority families. Political leaders, his reasoning goes, would think twice about sending into war the sons and daughters of a more complete cross-section of America. But whether or not one agrees with Rangel’s rationale, many Americans would agree that universal service can be a great leveler and a unifying force in society.”

  56. A good question does arise though. If military duty was manitory would we be in Iraq? Would you still be for the war? Would we still have this “Military Industrial Complex”?

  57. I nearly believe that if military duty was manditory that we would be a nation focused on defense and the motherland vs. playing world police.

  58. Chuck says:

If the number of military personnel diminished to the point of danger to our defense then I would agree with this bill with the exception of women in combat. I do not believe women should be involved in activities which would present a very possible chance that they would be captured or engaged in hand to hand combat.

I don’t believe we will have that major of a problem with our number of enlisted soldiers.

My brother is scheduled to go to Iraq in Dec. and I still support this country’s involvement. There shouldn’t be any difference whether it’s your family or a guy from North Dakota. They are still Americans! As a citizen of the United States of America I do hate the fact that even 1 American has died. He or she is my brother or sister. I know many people feel the same way. That being said I agree that there are people that would change their opinion if it was their family going off to war.

  59. The Zoner says:

Why do you support the country’s involvement? I support those that are there or are going to be there. But the country’s involvement I no longer support, although I used to.

  60. “But until now, no fan or critic has pointed out the controversial game’s connection to Mr. Warren or his dominionist agenda.”

    http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A78934

  62. Chuck says:

I still support our efforts now because we are helping give hope to a nation of people that could not help themselves. I believe if we completely withdraw our troops now then the ones that have died have died in vain and we have done that country a disservice by not finishing what we started and leaving them in total disaray. Without our presence in Iraq it is ripe for another extremist dictator to come in and take over.

Some people don’t agree with the sacrificing of Americans for freedom for others. That is their right to feel that way. I happen to feel differently. I believe we have helped ourselves as well as the Iraqi people by eliminating Saddam and his regime from power. I also believe we made a strong statement to concerning those who wish to attack U. S. soil. This can’t be proven, but I am confident had we not attacked Afghanastan and Iraq we would already have been attacked here at least once more. I do believe we will be attacked again, but I don’t believe we will have the frequency of attacks that other countries do.

  69. Chuck says:

Tyler - I believe Mr. Keyes misunderstood what I believe the president was trying to say or else he just made an opportunity to berate the president. I believe the president when referring to the universal democratic principles did not mean for the people of that country to vote and the majority rules that decision. The way I took it he was referring to one component of the right of democratic governance which is: (a) The rights to freedom of opinion and expression, of thought, conscience and religion, and of peaceful association and assembly.
This is just one of the components of the rights of democratic governance identified by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva on 11/26/02.

  70. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=50382

Above link is an example of the horrific things going on in this world. Why Iraq and not North Korea? Especially after we captured Saddom. I understand what your saying but I think Mr. keyes point is that it is and will be an Islamic nation and it obviously will not adhear what you stated in your comment.

  71. Chuck says:

I agree with you that they will not adhear to democratic principles, but that shouldn’t cause one to abstain from pointing out their fallacies. We (Christians) continuously tell the world that homosexuallity is wrong, knowing that it falls on deaf ears most of time.

As far as North Korea is concerned, I don’t know. I am not informed enough with facts to know how critical of a situation that is. I do believe that as I stated before that we can’t just abandon Iraq because we captured Saddam. I know there are other parts of the world that we could be helping, but you don’t want to spread yourself too thin. So how do you choose? I don’t know exactly because I nor you have the information needed to make that decision. Was there somewhere else we needed to go besides Iraq? Possibly. I just don’t know, Tyler. That is probably one of the reasons I would love to be president of the United States so I would have access to the information needed to make qualified decisions so people could criticize every move I make.
