New look
April 28th, 2006I said last week that change was coming, and now it’s here. What do you think?
I still have some tweaking to do with the blog over the next several days. The image at the top will eventually be clickable so it will always return you to the home page, and I’ll be adding the “Recent Comments” list to the top of the sidebar as it was previously.
I’m pretty much an HTML idiot, but fortunately I work with some college students who know these things and can help me out.
I’m happy to hear any suggestions or criticisms you might have.
UPDATE: A special thanks to Union University student Josh Wilkerson, who designed my header for me. I think he did a great job.
Dude. Very nice. Clean, sharp. Well done.
I miss the comments section though. I’ll be glad for that to come back. That’s how I keep up with the pearls of wisdom that are dispensed on this site…
Yeah, the comments are at the top of my priority list. Heck, that’s how I keep up with the pearls of wisdom that are dispensed on this site. I can get them up there right now, but they’re not formatted the way I want them to be. I’ll have to play around with it a little, or turn it over to someone who is much brighter than I.
Also, I should add, if you experience any glitches, please let me know.
Very nice, Tim. I like what you’ve done with the place. You might want to consider adding a soft-drink fountain and popcorn machine for the pleasure of your readers.
Wow.
I love it.
Very nice Tim.
The header is really great. Is it going to be baseball all the time, or do you have others that you will use on a seasonal basis?
I love it too! I actually did the comment sidebar on my blog because I liked it so much on yours. Very nice look.
An aside: I wouldn’t mind some response from some Cardinal fans over at my blog as we ask: Is Jim Edmonds a Hall of Famer?
The only thing is, that the time given with comments is two hours behind my actual time in Illinois. Is the clock on Pacific time?
Bob — Probably going to be baseball all the time, although I might change it seasonally. I haven’t completely decided yet.
Someone told me there’s a glitch in trying to change the “who” is commenting. There should be a “Change” link next to your name. Can some of you tell me if it’s working for you? If not, can anybody tell me how to fix it?
Bob — I’ll look into the time.
Yeah, you get a javascript “Object expected” error supposedly on Line 226 (but don’t hold your breath).
Well, I just retested and it showed the same error for Line 1. In any case, there’s probably a application object that hasn’t been referenced (and should be) by the skin.
I don’t do PHP or I’d try to help more…
Yeah, Jason, you might as well be speaking Yiddish.
Sorry. You asked. I should have stuck with “Yes, Tim, it’s broken.”
Anyway, you’ve given me “blog-envy” and now I have to update mine. I’ve been putting off an upgrade for a while, but I think it’ll let me do more flexible designs… Uugh.
I like it, Tim. The color scheme is easier on the eyes…
But I do have one question, When did you remove the “From a Christian Worldview” from your title?? I know that I am a little slow, but I am still curious….
Oh wait… That was a coded message to Craig and Gordon (and to deceive the Soviets, right Craig?)…
Oooo…maybe Yiddish IS an attempt to deceive the Soviets. Man, I could get on this conspiracy train with Tyler.
David –
I decided that it was less cumbersome just to have “Christianity” in the title. Did it several weeks ago.
Anybody know how I can make my header clickable? Here’s the coding I see on my template for the image:
/* Header */
h1#header {
margin: 0;
height: 313px;
background: url(images/head.jpg) 0 no-repeat;
text-indent: -1234em;
Mine isn’t set up that way… I’d look at the code if you wanted to e-mail me some text files for the theme.
Also, I like how your sub-categories are all listed under their parent categories… I want to do that with mine but I have no idea how to do that. I wish they made this programming garbage easier to understand.
Yeah, Tim, I agree with Chris. I think you’re in the style sheet, but i doubt that’ll help you get to setting up the banner as you desire. You’ll likely have to poke into the PHP files and add a HTML .. link.
Wow…you’ve been busy since this morning! Love the look. The clean and simple make it easier to focus on the posts.
When you guys figure out the “link in the header” thing, how about letting me in on the secret?
Good change. Have you thought about putting an additionaly sidebar on the right side as well though? I wish I could do it to mine, but I can’t find a blogger template that I like that has it.
The new look rocks my face off. Dave Auten says that.
Tim…it seems that you have made each and every page a link to your front page…most folks, if they click into a text box to reply, will get taken back to your homepage.
While I happen to be a keyboard/shortcut kind of guy, many folks rely heavily on their mouse and pointing abilities…
oh. never mind.
Yeah Jason, I’m playing and you caught me in the middle of something that obviously didn’t work.
Sorry. I’ll leave you alone for a while…
No sooner did I pull the trigger for that did I notice it was gone… figures.
Which, brings me to my new site recommendation: Enable your bloggers to remove their own comments!
Haha, that just happened to me too, I got confused - and a little hurt, as if you didn’t want me to comment.
But rock on Tim! This is a nice look!
OK, that may have it fixed now. The header image should be clickable and should return you to the home page. Please let me know if there are problems.
Thanks so much to Chris Kirsch for getting that figured out for me.
And thanks to all of you for your feedback and suggestions. I really appreciate it.
Daniel, to answer your question, I really prefer the two-column format.
It was pretty funny at first, however. I thought I had gone to the wrong site… even though I just clicked a bookmark.
Wow, I’m glad we’ve got that settled! Maddux is 5-0.
Progress. I think the “Recent Comments” are working the way I want them to.
The change is ok but I don’t do well with change so for now I’ll sit and stare untill I’m desensitized.
Jason,
its not a conspiracy theory, it is a conspiracy! I’m trying to tie this webpage change into it somehow.
Sirius changed their page also!
Now, Tyler, get sirius!
I wonder if it would be easier to discern where one comment ended and the next one began if the font or font color on the line that says “comment # 36″ was differenct from the font that contains the actual comment. Just my two cents.
Thanks for the suggestion, Tony. The style for the comments is something I’m going to tinker with. I may try to darken the boxes on the alternating comments to make them a little more distinct, and I’m not crazy about the “comment number” thing. I’ll probably change that at some point as well.
Looks good.
Send Josh Wilkerson my way!
Tony,
What about the comments now? Is that better?
IMHO, you need a recent headshot. You are much sexier now.
Hey, like the new website. But I made you better header.
I like it, Steve!
Boy oh boy the site looks good.
I like how every time I come here to comment it now welcomes me back. I am a little worried that it wants me to change.
paul (Change)
Very nice, Tim. Thanks for listening to the “senior set” that visits your blog (smile). Much easier to distinguish comment from comment, for me anyway.
Change! I hate Change!
How come we didn’t get to vote on this? I demand my rights!
Because this is not a democracy. It is a benevolent dictatorship.
Well, usually benevolent.
Help! I’m being oppressed!
Let’s see. Not bad Tim, except I don’t know. There seems to be something missing. Wait, I got it! My blog added to your blogroll. What do ya think? Have I earned a hallowed spot next to the others? I know I’m a Cubs fan, please do not hold that against me!
Indeed, Tom. I had been intending to do that, so thanks for the reminder. It’s on the list, and I’ll probably give you a plug in a post sometime soon.
Oh, Tom. How shameless to have to ask Tim to put you on his blogroll. When he should please, please, please, put ME on his blogroll. Just to make it easy to copy and paste….
brotonysblog.blogspot.com
I mean, really, the nerve of self-promoting guys like Tom. Will it never end?
Children, children.
Tony, you scratch my back …
If you can teach me how to “enable” the blog roll feature on my blog site, I’ll list you first!
Hey Tim,
Had to go with a slightly different background, but mission accomplished….
In other words, consider yourself “scratched”.
Tony, at least i had Tim on mine for a couple weeks now. Us little guys gotta scratch and claw for every morsel we get. I have no pride!!
Oh and Tim, thank you (bows as a courtesy)
Touche, Tom. Please forgive my misdirected begging. It wasn’t personal. You were just convenient.
BTW, I visited your blog. Very nice.
