Simpson upset about criticism from Christian group
July 27th, 2005
Jessica Simpson isn’t happy with the criticism leveled against her by John Connor, of the Christian group The Resistance. Connor blasted Simpson for dancing around like a stripper in her video, “These Boots are Made for Walking.”
“It’s disappointing to have Jessica, a pastor’s daughter and Christian role model, join the ranks of the ’singing strippers’ such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera,” Connor said. “She has one of the most beautiful voices, and is a very beautiful girl, but it’s sad to see her whore her self out like this.”
Simpson responded:
“It didn’t really surprise me because I grew up with a lot of that backlash. That’s why I didn’t end up going into the Christian music industry. I think that if they’re really good Christians the judgment wouldn’t be there.”
Mr. Connor is right, at least to a point. I disagree with him about Simpson being a Christian role model, however. She abandoned that image a long time ago.
Someone help me out here. At what point was Jessica Simpson ever a “Christian role model”? At what point did she stop being one? And since when was a pastor’s daughter automatically a “Christian role model”? Anyone?
The only thing she’s lacking in her act is a pole. It’s a shame to see a woman with such talent prostituting herself to the entertainment industry. What gets me is that she’s doing all this with the approval and encouragement of her father.
Her Dad is not a pastor. He was a pastor, but the money in promoting his daughters was too tempting.
Ms. Simpson said, “It didn’t really surprise me because I grew up with a lot of that backlash. That’s why I didn’t end up going into the Christian music industry. I think that if they’re really good Christians the judgment wouldn’t be there.”
My questions to her are: What is the real reason why you didn’t go into Christian music and what is your definition of a really good Christian? Not to be judgemental as I think there is some hypocrisy in your statement; I do believe a really good Christian would try really hard to stay away from the world and avoid all apperances of evil. I sense some blame shifting going on.
Am I off the mark on this?
But then again, we really should be praying for her.
In a recent TV interview, Jessica’s father stated that she did not go into CCM because a record label exec told her that she was too…..”built” and that nobody would pay attention to the music. Now she’s claiming a different reason for not going CCM. Hmmmmm….
I’m admittedly a little cynical about CCM…. so I don’t think her “build” would bother many CCM labels one bit.
Alex, I said the same earlier this morning. It’s hard for me to imagine a CCM exec saying “You know what, your daughter’s just too good-looking. We’re not interested.” I think Pops either misunderstood or is making that up.
I can imagine a record exec saying, “If you go into mainstream, you can shed some clothes and use that body of yours to make some real money. Here’s a big fat check with your name on it. Call me when you’re ready.”
