24: Hours 23-24
May 21st, 2007Another season of 24 is in the books. I was expecting some big twist at the end, but it never happened. I’m not convinced that Old Man Bauer was still on the oil platform when it was destroyed, and think there’s a chance he could have managed to get away on the boat. Anybody else think that’s a possibility, or am I grasping?
What did you think of the final episode?
I was also relieved to hear in the promo that next season of 24 will be the best one yet — because I was a little concerned that the new season might be inferior. I’m happy to get it on good authority that next year will be the best so far.
Sarcasm off.
Tonight convinced me that I’m now done with 24.
Tim,
Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I really enjoyed this season’s finale in spite of the fact that I thought it was the least interesting season overall (granted its so hard to top previous years). This would have been a good season had it not be a remake of the excellent season 2.
I was very much impressed with the themeatic undertones of these episodes. Jack’s sacrificial decision to save an innocent boy contrasted sharply with the willingness of the government to sacrifice those innocent but “inconsequential” individuals in the name of duty. Jack’s rescue of Josh contrast with Secretary Heller’s abandonment of Bauer to the Chinese. Cheng reminds CTU of their negligance as Bill can only turn away in silence.
Jack’s confrontation of Heller kinda reminded me of John Rambo’s little speech at the end of First Blood. It was the overflow of the frustration of a soldier who had been turned into a killing machine and then left out in the cold by his unloving motherland.

Tim,
I thought the same thing about old man Bauer. Also, I noticed that when the final clock counted down the end of the season it was silent. On one of the DVDs a producer said that they only do that when someone dies. So either they changed the way they do that, or someone died and we didn’t get to see it.
Maybe we are both just reading too much into it; looking for the twist that never came.
Regarding the silent clock, Jack did say his father was already dead to him. I guess we might read the same thing into Sec. Heller.
Anybody else think of Jack jumping, hence the silent clock? I wouldn’t bet on it, but the way he looked over the cliff, it made me wonder.
I hate to say it, and I don’t know how I would do it, but I think Jack has to die next season. I’m seeing some sort of situation where maybe Kim comes back and sends Jack over another edge. I think for the show to get back to being unpredictable, he has to go. Who knows if it will work - but they had to know how quickly the show could lose it with Jack constantly surviving every terrorist and scenario and saving the day.
Rumors abound that the show is in for a major overhaul that could even mean the end of CTU as the backdrop for the show. Maybe that’s a start. Get Jack out of L.A. as well, that poor city has had enough close calls and disasters.
Thought the same thing myself about Papa Bauer, interesting that Cheng just went ahead and gave him the component back. A bit too convenient that he was left right to die by a boat that was ready to head out to sea.
Looks like Jack’s not done yet…
15 hours later in “24 Debrief,” watch it while it lasts:
