Court takes ‘Bong Hits 4 Jesus’ case

December 5th, 2006

From AP:

The Supreme Court stepped into a dispute over free speech Friday involving a suspended high school student and his banner that proclaimed “Bong Hits 4 Jesus.”

The justices agreed to hear the appeal by the Juneau, Alaska, school board and principal Deborah Morse of a lower court ruling that allowed the student’s civil rights lawsuit to proceed. The school board hired former Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr to argue its case to the high court.

Morse suspended Frederick after he displayed the banner, with its reference to marijuana use, when the Olympic torch passed through Juneau in 2002 on its way to the Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

Frederick, then a senior, was off school property when he hoisted the banner but was suspended for violating the school’s policy of promoting illegal substances at a school-sanctioned event.

I don’t even know what to say.

So, he was OFF school property? Wouldn’t that fall under his right to free speech? I guess I didn’t see how he was at a school sanctioned event.

I saw a t-shirt the other day. It said, “Jesus loves you…but I’m his favorite.” Pretty funny.

Jason, did you ever take a look at those links concerning Packer, Piper, and Owen?

What does school sanctioned mean in this context? If a local school supports or gives their blessing for a local community event, does that make it sanctioned? I could hardly see the school having the authority to say to the olympic committe, “sorry, you can’t come through here”. I am pretty sure that authority would lie on the shoulders of the city/county and not the school system- especially since it was not on school property.
Not that I agree with the guy, but how in the world does that qualify for grounds of school suspension?

John Taylor Gatto has it right on our public school system. Check it out below. He will challenge all your positive beliefs in the school system.

Newman, I just spent about 10 minutes or so reading through the history of school on his site and there was not a single quote or reference made. It appears as a running monologue without any type of empiracal evidence for his argument. Maybe you know more about him than I, but if a man makes claims, he should be willing to list some proof and not just make statements. Maybe he saves that for the book, I don’t know. I do know that by reading what I just read, I would not spend my money on the book (even with the free tape and autographed plate). If he gave me proof of these things on his website via references that are provable, I would look further into it.

There is a situation that is starting to brew here locally, and it probably will end up in a lawsuit by the offended.

Basically a local man is holding pig races on Fridays in response to the local Islamic Assoc. planning to build a mosque next to his acreage.

This is going to be interesting…

    That’s hilarious.

I haven’t read the history one, I just mostly agree with his “Against School” Essay. He backs things up there. I plan on spending more time because I think he is on to
    something.

Ever since listening to the essay I heard many things from my wife and mother who teach that supports what he says.

    anyway check this out
