Too many to name! I’ll have to give that some serious thought.
Gosh Tim, you just ruined my day by breaking this news.
“Nip it in the bud. First sign of youngsters going wrong, you’ve got to nip it in the bud.”
Anything bullet-in-pocket related.
The scene where he has the pickles in the suitcase but instead of just leaving he keeps explaining to Aunt Bee where he’s going.
The scene where he and the department store owner are sneaking around in the store at night, each thinking that the other is a thief.
“You got a uvula, I got a uvula, all God’s children got a uvula.”
(Barney and the Choir)
Barney dancing with “Big Maude” in “The Escaped Convicts”.
Just to name a few.
Heh. Marty, that pickle scene is the one we’ve been showing at work all night.
I’m more a fan of the time in Three’s Company when Knotts doesn’t realize John Ritter isn’t gay. You know, that scene.
Speaking of Ernest T. Bass, “I think he’s a nut!”
Darren McGavin also died today at age 83. He starred in the greatest Christmas movie of all time, A Christmas Story, as Raphie’s Dad. Anyone else love the “leg lamp” scene?
The episode where Barney is walking around this guy’s barn that burned and dips into a bucket to drink what he thinks is water, turns out to be moonshine.
Though not a Barney moment, he and Tim Conway in the movie Private Eyes is a classic.
Almost every scene with Barney was classic! For some reason, I never get tired of watching that show. The characters are so likable. One of my favorites is where Barney is hunkered down in front of a convict’s car and they don’t know it. They start the engine and Barney freaks out and braces himself and franticly tries to stop the car in case they try to drive it away.
When I was in college at Memphis, I got to see Don in person at an event on campus. He showed some clips of some of his work before his appearance on the Andy Griffith Show. My favorite was a skit where he was a weatherman who had lost his weather report. He nervously proceeded to try to tell the television audience the weather forecast with a blank US map behind him. After a few minutes of hem hawing through the segment, he finally wrote out on the weather map and said “We’ll have High Pressure across the country” writing a big H-P, “and an Even Low in the middle,” writing E-L in the middle. The result was the word “HELP” written across the US map. It was very funny!
On the Andy Griffith Show, you could read some of those scripts and wonder where the humor was. Don was able to create humor out of virtual thin air. His was an amazing craft. One I fear has been lost for a long time.
My kids still enjoy seeing those old shows on DVD. A friend and I enjoyed watching the “Mountain Wedding” episode this past weeked. Those shows are true classics. There are whole scenes that I can quote even now.
Don was a national teasure. He will be sorely missed.
Thanks for your post, Tim. One of many favorite Barney quotes: “Nothing hurts worse than a torn calcium.” Here’s a brief post from my blog:

In my opinion, everyone is allowed to be a nerd about one thing. For some it’s Star Trek, for others it’s NASCAR, and for some it’s even scrapbooking (that one’s for you, honey:-) Whatever the case, most of us have one mild obsession that can be filed in the “miscellaneous” category of our brain. Well, my one near-addiction is “The Andy Griffith Show.” Hands down my favorite show of all time –- I love the values, the characters, the humor; and it’s safe to watch with my boys without having to keep my trigger finger on the remote. Therefore, I was so saddened to hear the news that Don Knotts passed away on Friday. As an entertainer myself, I learned so much from Don’s comedic timing and physical antics. And he has provided miles of smiles to me and my family over the years. May God bless and comfort his family and friends during this time of grief. And if you’ve never seen Barney Fife in action, let me invite you to Mayberry –- it’s a great little town.
I heartily agree with Joel Maners.
Don Knotts was, and is, a national treasure. He will be forever linked with Andy Griffith, and yet had a career which stands by itself.
The greats of our youth are leaving us….and so few left to carry on. Don is one of a kind.
I love The Andy Griffith Show! My Favorite one with Barney is when he get that motorcycle with the sidecar! Funny stuff. What about when he buys his first car from the theives! LOL Barney Rulz!
My Favorite Barney Quotes:
“It’s not a whim anymore if you put on clean underwear.”
“Man gets his best suit spotted and pressed, spends two hours polishing his hat, and for what? Heartaches!”
“Boy, giraffes are selfish! Always running around, getting hit by lightning, looking out for number one…”
