And the National League Cy Young winner is …
September 23rd, 2005
A month ago, Chris Carpenter had the Cy Young Award all but locked up. He’s thrown it away in September.
After tonight’s outing in which Carpenter gave up nine runs, Dontrelle Willis of the Florida Marlins is now the pitcher most deserving of the Cy Young Award in the National League. He’s got one more win than Carpenter, and thanks to the beating the Brewers laid on Carpenter tonight, Willis’ ERA is also much better. Nice choke job by Carpenter.
just as long as he gets it back on track (what’s this been, three dipsy-do games in a row?) before we need him in game five of the World Series against Cleveland.
I agree. Willis should win the Cy Young. I’m sorry for you Cardinal fans though. It looked like Carpenter had it won a couple of weeks ago.
Two weeks ago I would have disagreed, but Willis has finished strong and the way he hits helps his team even more than Carpenter can imagine. The D-Train for Cy Young!
Good point about Dontrelle’s hitting, Jeff. Chris Carpenter looks as if he can’t be bothered to put any effort whatsoever into an at-bat. He’s had a great season on the pitcher’s mound, though; perhaps he would have been a little more focused during his recent starts if the Cardinals hadn’t clinched their division by, like, mid-June!
: )
When I saw that Dontrelle was hitting SEVENTH, something no pitcher has done since some guy in 1973 before I was born, that pretty much clinched it for me. Still, how bad do the guys hitting behind him who are actually paid and trained to hit all the time, feel? I would ask A.J. Burnett but apparently he’s not around the clubhouse anymore. Weird.
so when do you become a member of the BBWAA? we need every carpenter vote we can get if they tie for wns. who is your MVP? Pujols or Jones?
Yeah! D-Train got rocked tonight! No win#23 for him, and his ERA went up. Now, just one knockout game for Carpenter to finish off the season, and here comes Mr. Young. Cy Cy oh my!
