2006 British Open predictions
July 17th, 2006One of my favorite sporting events is this weekend — the British Open. Can Phil Mickelson overcome his brain freeze on the final hole of the U.S. Open? Will Tiger Woods be the old Tiger Woods again?
Play begins on Thursday.
UPDATE: Since I’m getting a lot of search engine traffic from people looking for 2006 British Open predictions, I thought I’d provide a couple of links. Gary Van Sickle of Sports Illustrated offers his odds for each player in the tournament, while SI’s Alan Shipnuck offers his picks.
UPDATE #2: Here are some more predictions from the folks at SI. Woods, Singh, Howell and Harrigton are getting some nods.
I was reading SI’s top picks to win. They pointed out that Mickelson is the prototypical American golfer–lots of spin and flop shots. That stuff doesn’t play well on a links course. That makes sense but I still think he has a shot.
He’s always been my favorite–even before winning big. I’m a lefty too.
Can’t wait Tim. I have to work this weekend, but the VCR is ready to go. It is actually nice to tape the matches. I can ffw and make a 6 hr round about 2 1/2 (which is needed if I am going to get to watch it). It is, however, very difficult to spend an entire weekend beginning every conversation with, “Don’t say a word about the golf tourn.” My “hero father-in-law” is particularly notorious for giving “hints” that aren’t so subtle.
[…] those of you finding this through search engines, here’s a link to my entry for the 2006 British Open, which offers a couple of links to some predictions. Thanks for visiting. Feel free to cont […]
I like Darren Clarke, but it’s a wide open field (no pun intended).
I’m thinking we’ll see someone young like a Luke Donald or Adam Scott finally break out in a major.
I would like to see Donald, but his finishes in the British have been heinous. I have a feeling it’s going to be Tiger-Tiger-Tiger Woods, y’all.
I finally finished picking my team for the ESPN Best Ball Challenge. I have Geoff Ogilvy, David Howell, Paul Casey, and Johan Edfors (my dark horse). I think Ogilvy and Casey have the best shot, but David Howell has played very well on the European Tour this year. Edfors hasn’t gotten much recognition, but he has been hot as of late. I don’t forsee any Americans in the close running. Colin Montgomery might play well in the beginning, but he will undoubtably faulter by the end of the second round. Els isn’t on his game right now and Mickelson will have to drive the ball much better than he did at the Open last month. Still, I think this year is shaping up to be one for the Europeans. Finally, Tiger will once again miss the cut. He isn’t on his game and knowing Tiger, he will press the issue, trying to hit great shots without having the game to pull them off.
Alright, so these are my boldest predictions ever for the British, so don’t hammer me on Sunday when you notice Tiger in 1st and Mickleson in 2nd, with Monte making a late run. I don’t think it will happen, but after all this is the British, where even John Daly has won.
