College football poll nonsense
October 8th, 2007I was looking at the new college football rankings for the week, and noticed something screwy. Can someone explain to me why Boston College, at 6-0, is ranked fourth, while Missouri, at 5-0, is ranked 11th?
Boston College has wins over Wake Forest, NC State, Army, UMASS, and a Georgia Tech team that was ranked 15th at the time but has since fallen from the poll.
Missouri, meanwhile, has a win at Illinois (now ranked 18th), a 41-6 pummeling of Nebraska (ranked 25th at the time), plus wins at Mississippi and against Western Michigan and Illinois State.
Missouri is far more deserving of a top-five ranking than BC is. And it’s absolutely ridiculous to have a seven-spot discrepancy between the two teams.
I couldn’t agree more, especially considering that both started the season unranked. Once again i think it’s Big 12 bias.
Actually, I think BC was ranked in the preseason. That is probably the reason for the discrepancy. I definitely believe that Missouri should be ranked higher, especially ahead of South Florida. I know USF is the media darling right now and they beat West Virginia, but they are not even a top ten team, let alone a top five.
I just can’t believe USC only fell to 10th. If it were up to me, I’d knock them out altogether.
Rankings prior to week 6 or 7 or not only futile, but counterproductive to the whole system. A team like Appy State goes into the Big House and upsets #5 in the country. What we know now is that Michigan should NEVER have been in the top 5. These rankings are pathetic.
This is why I just gave up on college football. The games themselves are great but beyond that, forget it. You might as well pull names out of a hat to get a national champion.
I guess that pollsters figure that after the Sooners get done dismanteling Missouri’s team this Saturday, they won’t need to be in the top 5 anyway. It would only be a major discouragement to make it there, then get knocked out the next week, so why hurt them that way? They are only being logical, really, honestly, seriously.
Or how about Georgia getting a higher ranking than Tennessee even though they both have 2 losses and Tennessee destroyed Georgia this past weekend?
I was surprised, nay, shocked that my Longhorns are still ranked.
How does that taste Aggie fan?
I agree with Joel. I still love to watch anf follow NCAA FB, but the whole ranking system is wack. How is my Fighting Illini ranked only 18 after beating #5 Mizzou?
thats a joke..right? Mizzou beat your guys.
I’m guessing that Zoner intended to write “#5 Wisconsin” instead of “#5 Mizzou.”
I would say that Florida’s 39 point whooping of Tennessee still may hold some weight in the voters mind. South Florida did beat then 17 Auburn and Number 5 West Virgina - The Big East for one reason or another has developed a reputation and as the conferences top team USF will enjoy a top 5 to 10 status — for better or worse — Neither Boston College nor Missouri were ranked in the Top 25 preseason — BC was 28th and 26th - Mizzou was 26th and 32nd
Of course it’s Big 12 bias… and rightly so!
Missouri should be higher than usc and usf. But I think their sched. is about the same as BC, certainly no better.
Until there’s a playoff as in 1AA this will always be a joke.
There’s an on-line petition you can “sign” trying to get the Coaches’ Poll and Harris Interactive Poll ballots made public (like the AP Poll). It also asks the BCS to only use polls that have public ballots. This is a good cause, so please spread the word (on other boards or wherever).
