Talk about a turncoat. Johnny Damon will sign with the New York Yankees for four years and $52 million, according to reports.
Evidently the rivalry doesn’t mean as much to the players as it does to the fans.
Jeff, how do you feel about that?
Thanks to Steven for the tip.

Would you consider his ‘do a mullett?
“Jesus” signs with the Yankees? I think this is a sign of the Apocalypse!
If it is true then Damon might as well paint a target on his back. He will instantly become the most hated man in baseball.
also Jeremy,
for the record a mullet is business in the front party in the back. Damon does not meat the “business in the front” qualification; so I don’t think that we could call it a mullet. A flop, or a mop maybe but not a mullet.
I hate Johnny Damon now.
Used to be my favorite player. Now…not so much. Actually. He is now on my most hated of all time list. Right up there with A-Rod and Sheffield.
I hope he loses all his powers when the Skankees make him hsvae his beard and hair.
Idiot!
Well, at least the MLB page on ESPN.com has it somewhat right. Their headline is: “DAMoN YANKEES”
Urgh, I hate the Yankees.
I hate the Yankees…. but if I were a player 12 million bucks would help me forget about a rivalry too. The Sox offered $40, the Yanks offered $52. I may not like it, but I sure can’t blame him. Can you?
It just really bothers me. I know I shouldn’t care so much. I just love baseball so much that it hurts when something happens that makes the game look bad. I know this is not scandal and I’m not a Yankees or Red Sox fan in particular. But I am a baseball fan and when players leave their teams it bothers me. I would like to see more loyalty on both sides (teams and players). However, I understand the business aspect of the sport. But Red Sox to Yankee, I don’t understand how you can make that switch. I understand Roger Clemens (he had been rejected by the Sox and spent a couple of years in Toronto), but this is hard to believe.
This just shatters the illusion that so many fans have about sports. We like to believe that these guys transcend money and fame. The fact is, they are in it for what they can get out of it and nothing more. I agree that it hurts the game. It hurts the game by telling us somethig we don’t want to hear. You can only live the fantasy for so long.
I’ll still cheer for him. I blame the Red Sox, not Johnny. Seriously, why not match four years and $13 million for a good leadoff hitter, someone who knows the quirks of Fenway and a clubhouse cutup? For shame.
I read an interesting column a little while back (I can’t remember where) about how fans now root for clothes. We root for jerseys that happen to say “Red Sox” or have a tomahawk across the chest of pinstripes or a silly bird.
Players come and go. Of course it didn’t used to be that way, but that’s the reality now. Its not as much fun, but there you have it.
The Yankees overpaid for Damon in the long run. It will look good for a year or two, but by year four they’ll be trying to unload him to the Twins or somebody and then they’ll still pay two thirds of his salary.
Just wait till he was to cut his hair and shave his beard. I wonder if he was smart enough to put somethig in his contract to prevent it.
Alex, I’m going to somewhat disagree. Of course, I root for the tomahawk, that’s no question. No matter what, I want the Braves to win, Period.
However, I still root for the players too. Even though Julio Franco has gone to the evil team, I’ll still root for him 110%. That’s the same things that’s happened to me with most of my favorites. (Tom Glavine, Javy Lopez, etc.)
There are a few exceptions, like Gary Sheffield. To think, I actually used to like that Jerk. He didn’t deserve the ‘chop.
