Favre leaning toward retirement
January 30th, 2006Brett Favre is contemplating his football future these days, and in an interview with ESPN’s Chris Mortensen said he’s leaning toward retirement.
Favre said he’d like to wait until training camp to make a decision, but he knows he can’t do that because the Green Bay Packers need an answer as they prepare for the draft,
“I love the game too much and I love my legacy too much to have that just be OK,” Favre said, “and I don’t want to be just OK. I want to be good, and I don’t know if I’m committed enough [right now] to be good on an everyday basis.”
I’d say it’s probably time for Favre to hang it up. He’s one of the game’s greats, and it seems pretty obvious that his heart’s not in it anymore.
Brett who?
Seriously, it was a little weird to hear him say that he’s not sure he wants the ball with the game on the line anymore. I don’t see how the Packers could bring him back after making that statement.
I think that all of the off-field adversity that Brett has had to deal with the last couple of years coupled with the advancement of time has served to take a little of his desire away from him. As much as I hate to say it, this would be a good time for him to close a great career.
Please already! Retire or dont retire but can Favre please shut up?
Why the hate for Favre, Peter? As far as I know, this is the only time he’s spoken of the matter in recent weeks.
Yeah the incessant speculation about retirement has come from the media, not Favre. He’s one of my all-time favorite players, but it probably is time to call it a career.
Please do not criticize or judge Mr. Favre. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. If you are perfect, then by all means, judge away. In fact, please don’t talk about it at all, it may offend someone.
I’m not sure how to interpret your request, Mr. Jones.
Is it that we are not to judge (on general principle), or that in your mind we are not to have any opinion on the immortal Brett Favre because he is above mere mortal speculation, based on his “legendary” NFL career?
Please clarify.
Thank you.
I actually love Favre as a player and while I admire the fact he is being honest, this drama has come up over the last 3 off-seasons and the maybe yes maybe no stuff is wearing thin. He has every right in the world to not be sure and reassess his situation after each season. I just think it shows instablity to the organization for him to voice his feelings each time his mind is changing. He talks about this during the season as well. I can count at least 5 or 6 times that Ive heard quotes on MNF, CNNSI.com’s Peter King and others claiming he said something. Its his perrogative but make the decision and thats it, not leaning this way or that.
You’ve just got to hate having played your last game when you didn’t realize it was. I say for Brett to announce he will retire at the end of next season. I think that would be a nice way to end a career like he has had.
I think he is hurting the team by sticking around, as crazy as that sounds. A few stats I heard recently:
He has not thrown a game winning TD in the last 2 minutes in 6 years.
He was 31st in passer rating last year among starting quarterbacks (Only Aaron Brooks was worse).
The team is not going to be good with him, so he might as well retire so they can get on with the rebuilding process.
After watching the interview, I think that the only thing holding him back from retirement is that he just can’t imagine life without football. He needs some time to develop a vision for what his life could look like. I can’t imagine going through his ordeal. All he has known his entire life is football. Now he has to give it up. What else will he do? What CAN he do? Only Brett can answer that question for himself and those answers won’t come easy.
I hate the Packers as a Bears fan so goodbye Brett. I hope the Pack are a doormat for many years to come.
One thing I take issue with is his consecutive games streak. After reading about his addiction to vicodin and how he would puke and pick the pills out of it and reingest them, I got to thinking that maybe it’s not such a great streak at all. And surely many players take the pills, but if we are going to criticize the home run records, shouldn’t we also look at painkillers and longevity?
I’ve never cared much for the Packers, but I’ve always sorta liked Brett Favre, in spite of (or maybe because of?) some of his off-the-field struggles. Plus he always struck me as a gamer, the guy you could count on to suit up, every Sunday, no matter how bad the team or the weather conditions at Lambeau Field.
With 20 years to go before I can even THINK about retiring, it’s hard for me, out here in the “real world,” to imagine giving up the job/game that he has played and enjoyed all of his life, right now, when he’s in the “prime” of his life (in terms, once again, of the “real world,” as opposed to the professional sports world).
The good news is: This is America. If he chooses to retire, he can still go out and do just about anything he wants, career-wise … and if he chooses not to retire, I guess he can put up with another losing season in what looks to be one of the coldest places on earth!
: )
Well, either this is Tyler and I just answered my own question asking him if he’s on drugs, or someone really random and screwed up is doing something really random and screwed up…
