HOF or not: Jeff Bagwell
February 28th, 2007
Jeff Bagwell finished his injury-shortened career with 449 HR, 1529 RBI, 2314 H and a career .297 BA. In a rarity in baseball today, he played his entire career with the Houston Astros.
He won the MVP in 1994 and was a four-time All-Star.
Bagwell: HOF or not?
Discussed previously:
Mike Mussina
Pedro Martinez
Jim Edmonds
Fred McGriff
Juan Gonzalez
Without a doubt.
Setting aside my bias for the hometown team, he’s not a lock. Why? Because while there is a case for Baggy, true HOFers (in my estimation) don’t need a case to be made for them. For example, Ripken is a HOFer b/c no case is necessary, the man just is.
That being said, as an Astros fan, yeah Baggy deserves to get it in and he will. It doesn’t hurt him that he was good to the media.
Absolutely
In.
Speaking of the HOF, Santo got the shaft again by the Veterans Committee. As much as I despise the Cubs, it’s a crime this guys isn’t in.
Amen Brett.
Bagwell always crushed the Reds; so I’m glad he’s retired. He has solid and consistent offensive numbers. He won a Gold Glove (’94 same year as his MVP), and I love the fact that he played all 15 seasons with the Astros.
I say yes.
(And Biggio is a “yes” also.)
Yes
Wow, the Astro fan finds himself in the minority…

No way. I hate to beat a dead horse but this is not the Hall of really good players. Bagwell, as great a ball player as he was, did not even reach the traditional offensive bench marks in an era when the bench marks are being blasted away. He has my respect, but not my vote.
Paul you couldn’t be more wrong. Along with Frank Thomas, Jeff Bagwell was the finest right-handed hitter of the 90’s.
He was a ROY, he won a gold glove, 4-time all-star, he was a 40-30 player twice. 449 HRs, lifetime OPS of .948, won an MVP, was an iron man-type player and on and on and on. He did it all. If he is not a HOFer then shut the whole thing down.
Bagwell is definitely a HOFer in my book.
Zoner, your comment that if Bags is not a HOF “then shut the whole thing down” is a wonderful hyperbole illustration.
I do think he’s a HOF, but shut the whole thing down if he’s not elected?! That’s like me saying shut the whole thing down since Dave Concepcion isn’t in the Hall.
Come to think of it, if Concepcion isn’t a HOFer then shut the whole thing down!
I say “in.”
Bagwell is a Hall of Famer, no doubt. One of the most underrated players of our time, Travis, agreed about Concepcion! Go Reds!
It’s hyperbole. But the point is he is one of the best players of his generation. If guys like him don’t get in then who cares about the Hall?
Davey Concepcion for the Hall? That’s a joke right?
A joke?! Zoner, you might think about changing your screen name to “Stoner”. The joke is that the anchor for the best infield of the ’70s isn’t in the Hall.
This is all said in fun, by the way!
The “Stoner” part is the joke; the other part is on the level.
I’m going to go ahead and guess that your are originally from the Cincy area. Because nationally, you’d have a difficult time finding 1 out of every ten baseball fans or writers that think Concepcion belongs in the hall.
Playing in that monstrosity Houston calls the Astrodome cost Bagwell numerous homers in the prime of his career. HOF-YES
