Jeff Suppan a Christian?
October 25th, 2006Over the past couple of days I’ve been getting a few hits from people doing Google searches for “Jeff Suppan” and “Christian.” In fact, I’m the top hit on Google for that search.
Of all the interviews I’ve done with Christian athletes, I’ve never written anything about Suppan being a Christian. Nor have any of my contacts in baseball ever told me that Suppan is a Christian. But I’ve often wondered it myself, simply from observing the way he acts. He’s one of those athletes who carries himself in such a way that it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that he was a Christian.
I presume he’s a Roman Catholic, based on his bio at the Cardinals website. According to that bio, he serves as a member of the Pontifical Council of Church and Sport. This past offseason, he had a chance to visit Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican.
So, that’s what I know about the topic. I hope it might be of some use to those finding me through these searches.
Tim, I wondered about Supp when his dad was interviewed during the NLCS game and basicaly said he fasted all day when Jeff was pitching and then as soon as he was out of the game he was spotted scarfing a dog and a soda. I asked Scott L. the next day if he knew if Supp was a Christian he said I should ask you.
The reason why you’ve gotten it recently is b/c of the stem-cell intiative civil war going on here in Missouri. Those in favor and the Dems have brought in Michael J. Fox for commercials in favor of it and against Sen. Talent. Those against it have got Suppan, Mike Sweeny, Kurt Warner, the wife from Everybody loves Raymond in a commercial against it. BP ran a story on it today. Suppan caught some heat on local talk radio for it today.

I noticed that Suppan’s picture was on the front page of the St. Louis post-dispatch today as they were talking about the ad that he’s in.
yep, you called it. same for me.. i saw the Jeff Suppan in the counter ad against stem cell research and then googled “Jeff Suppan” and “Christian” and here i am to the first link.. you. =p take care,
steph =p
Why would his Dad fast on days he pitches? Maybe I’ll fast tomorrow and buy some lotto tickets.
And Tim, who hasn’t served on the Pontifical Council of Church and Sport?
Hi, Does anyone have a contact address for Jeff Suppan. A home address - not the Cardinals clubhouse? Thanks Spin
I thought this was a “no spin” zone.
jk
Nope, Spin, afraid not.
Seems pretty straightforward, he’s a Roman Catholic. Whether that answers the question put forth here in the affirmative or the negative depends, I suppose, on one’s view of how justification works.
