Lots of movement in the Hot Stove League
December 6th, 2006Greg Maddux to the Padres, J.D. Drew and Julio Lugo to the Red Sox, Manny Ramirez still with the Red Sox.
Some other items of note:
– Tony LaRussa has indicated that Braden Looper might be a possibility for the rotation next year. Um, say what?
– Jacque Jones has suggested he wants out of Chicago.
– Barry Bonds is still unemployed.
I think Bonds is going to have a tough time finding work outside San Francisco. The thought of the Twins signing him has crossed my mind, given that they want to bring back Rondell White (worst DH in the history of the DH) for another year. Even off the juice, Barry is still productive at the plate, and he’d probably be less injury-prone if he didn’t have to play in the field … but I can’t imagine any team with a decent shot at the playoffs wanting to deal with the circus following them everywhere.
My advice to Jacque Jones:
1. Change your cell phone number.
2. Every so often, TAKE that high fastball a foot off the plate.
AJC has reported that the Braves are shopping 1B Adam LaRoche and 2B Marcus Giles for pitching. One rumor has LaRoche going to the Angels for Scott Shields and Chone Figgins; Giles to the Padres for P Scott Linebrink (sp?).
Getting Linebrink would be sweet. Another rumor has Tim Hudson and Laroche involved in a three-team trade between the Mariners and the Giants.
The Giants would get Richie Sexson, the Mariners would get Hudson and Laroche, and the Braves would get Rafael Soriano and Armando Benitez.
I’m looking forward to the 2007 season. Manny can be Manny all he wants as long as he hits over 30 HR and 100 RBI’s. Go Sox!
I’m excited that all of Boston will have the joy of watching JD be JD. Have fun with that one.
who else is terrified at the news that TLR has been chatting up Barry Bonds (or at least his agent)?
–according to ESPN.com
Jason, I can honestly say that I threw up a little when I read that this morning.
1. Kennedy
2. Duncan
3. Bonds
4. Pujols
5. Rolen
6. Edmonds
7. Encarnacion
8. Molina
9. Pitcher du jour
In that line-up, Pujols has 300 RBI this year! I don’t think the Barry media circus would be as boisterous in the midwest. I would reluctantly welcome senor steroid.
TLR is denying any such meeting.
Sorry, Tony, but if the Cardinals signed Bonds, I’d refuse to attend any games in St. Louis as long as he’s on the team. He’s a cancer in the clubhouse, and the Cardinals don’t need him.
I said that my welcome would be reluctant.
Just looking at the line-up on paper though……what do you think?
I believe even I could manage that line-up!
Forgot Eck.
1. Kennedy-L (2B)
2. Eckstein-R (SS)
3. Bonds-L (LF)
4. Pujols-R (1B)
5. Duncan-L (RF)
6. Rolen-R (3B)
7. Edmonds-L (CF)
8. Molina-R (C)
9. Pitcher (P)
I wouldn’t want to face this line-up. You?
“I don’t think the Barry media circus would be as boisterous in the midwest”
Sure it would. He’s going for the all-time HR record and he’s embroiled in a a handful of scandals.
Do you honestly think the Cub fans would let the nearby presence of Bonds and his medicine cabinet go unnoticed?
I know the Braves’ fans wouldn’t, hehehe.
The Giants recently signed Benjie Molina to a contract. This makes Mike Matheny available. If Matheny’s playing days are indeed over (concussion), wouldn’t he make an outstanding bench coach in St. Louis?
A Dave Duncan and Mike Matheny tandem sharpening pitchers in “The ‘Lou” would be unstoppable!
1. Kennedy-L (2B)
2. Eckstein-R (SS)
3. Bonds-L (LF)
4. Pujols-R (1B)
5. Duncan-L (RF)
6. Rolen-R (3B)
7. Edmonds-L (CF)
8. Molina-R (C)
9. Pitcher (P)
–As a Cardinals fan I also wouldnt wanna ball hit to that OF either–A punch drunk Edmonds in Center, Barry Bonds is operating on like half a knee (plus he had a rubber hose for an arm BEFORE he starting aging—Sid Bream anyone), and Duncan just looks lost out there.
Not that it matters for ‘07–plus the Cards are now out of the running for Bonds–but Bonds had 10 or more OF assists in 9 seasons. His arm was anything but a rubber hose. He also has 8 gold gloves.
You bet the Braves fans wouldn’t.
Well, unfortunantly, Bonds will officially be in a MLB uniform in 2007. Resigned with San Francisco for $16 Million. Talk about overpriced. The guy can’t even play three straight games.
When I heard the Sox were interested in Drew a month ago, I told the wife, “That will not end well.” I look forward to being proven wrong when he hits 40 homers, drives in 145 and plays 160 games next season.
I’m also never going to see that happen because the man is a narcissistic injury-riddled headcase. Oy. The brain, it hurts.
We got the good year out of him.
Jason Marquis signs with the Cubbies…3 years, $20M.
He was 14-16 last season with an ERA of 6+ and a September record of 0-4.
Yup, sounds like a perfect fit for the North Siders.
Jeff, it’s safe to say you won’t be proven wrong any time soon. Seriously, 145 runs?! It’s good to have hope and all, but let’s not start serving snow cones in hell just yet.
Another crazy tidbit about JD from Bill Simmons:
” … and Drew really could be a back-to-back MVP hitting behind Big Papi. There’s probably no way all of these things will happen, but you have to admit … the thought is pretty tantalizing.”
Do all Boston fans eat paint chips? (only kidding.) ( … but seriously, do they?)
Dayn Perry of foxsports.com says that the answers to the Cardinals starting-pitching questions lies with re-signing Suppan at whatever he’s asking and then grabbing David Wells. Really? That’s the answer? Then I must have misunderstood the question!
