Maddux’s streak will end
September 28th, 2005
After losing last night, Greg Maddux’s incredible streak of 17 consecutive seasons with 15 or more wins will come to an end this year. At 13-14, he’s also in danger of finishing with a losing record for the first time in 18 years.
As much as I dislike the Cubs, Maddux has been one of my favorite pitchers to watch over the past two decades. He’s one of the best, and I wish his streak would have continued.
I have always loved Mad Dog, but he had to know his wins would be more difficult to get when he rejoined the Cubs … which tells me that either he enjoyed playing in Chicago so much that he couldn’t keep himself away, or that ultimately, as it does with many players in today’s market, it all came down to $$. Not trying to judge him in any way, just sayin’.
Though I would have thought some better teams would have been trying to get him a couple of years ago and he could have gone the Curt Schilling/Randy Johnson/Roger Clemens (and various others) route and joined a contending team.
Oh, wait: The Cubs were competitive in 2003. AND 2004 (sorta).
