Payne: No need for dialogue with Burk
May 8th, 2006New Augusta National chairman Billy Payne said the prestigious club’s members will continue to decide who’s in and who’s not. And for the foreseeable future, that will continue to be men only.
Martha Burk won’t be happy.
Burk led the campaign for female members at the home of the Masters when she was head of the National Council of Women’s Organizations. She had hoped to open a dialogue with Payne when he takes over May 21, and said that she sent him a letter over the weekend asking for a meeting.
Payne showed no interest.
“I think I’m aware of her positions on all issues as they relate to Augusta,” Payne said. “I don’t see that any dialogue would be meaningful or helpful.”
Good for him. They’re a private club and should be allowed to do whatever they choose.
Yep.
Amen. This is America. You ought to be able to start an organization and/or club and set the parameters for membership any way you desire, even if it is ridiculous. I hope the government stays out of this.
Augusta National…
Uterus-Free since 19?? and holding!
You don’t think Martha Burk would request “dialogue” on an issue merely for the sake of axe-grinding, do you? Who would stoop to such a thing?
As a woman I totally support Payne and Augusta for taking this stand. It’s a private club. All the whiny “NOW” supporters need to get a real life and get over it already.
Thanks for your thoughts, Lisa. I agree wholeheartedly. I think if there’s a private woman’s club that excludes men, I’d very much oppose a man trying to gain membership.
Hey Tim, there is a private womens club that excludes men. Its called the LPGA.
I’m actually in litigation right now with 2 of the Women’s Bible Study Groups at our church. Moms only groups that will not bend and will not let me participate. It’s so unfair! They shall all be smited! Or smote!
