Rolen trade talks cool off
December 4th, 2007According to Jayson Stark, negotiations between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers have cooled because the Cardinals are reluctant to trade Rolen to a divisional opponent.
Excuse me? If a team will take Rolen and pay him his entire salary, I don’t care where the Cardinals trade him. The guy’s a whiner and a clubhouse cancer. Send him anywhere you can — especially if you can get a pitcher like Chris Capuano in return.
Maybe the Cardinals can still trade him to the Dodgers or the Giants, but I think they’re making a mistake in backing out of the deal with Milwaukee.
I’m sure the Cubs will be more than willing to overpay for a position player that they don’t need who is past his prime.
Who’s gonna man the hot-corner for you guys if Rolen is gone, Tim? Although I guess this is a silly question considering how much time he’s missed over the past few seasons..

Maybe we can lure Terry Pendleton out of retirement. I’d take him over Crybaby Scott.
Stark says they were going to pay all of his salary, give the Cardinals Capuano, and a top prospect?!
Sheesh. Pull the trigger already.
I have heard the deal with the Brewers would include Bill Hall so I suppose that would be your third baseman
Deals I have also seen were Duncan and Rolen for Hank Blalock -
Reyes and prospect Bryan Anderson for Cliff Lee
According to mlbtraderumors.com:
“Brewers-Rolen deal croaked over something, but not the intra-division part.”

why would the indians do that trade?
And Luke–the Cubs have one of the best thrid basemen in the NL in Aramis Ramirez. We don’t need Rolen.
“Stark says they were going to pay all of his salary, give the Cardinals Capuano, and a top prospect?!” I don’t believe that at all.
I like Rolen, but I truly believe his playing days are done … at least in terms of any kind of everyday role. And there’s a lot to be said for playing hurt and “toughing it out” or whatever, but the guy couldn’t even swing a bat.
The Cards should get whatever they can for him and cut their losses. And, no, I do NOT wish for the Cubs to add him to their roster! I’ll take Ramirez’s offense and relatively steady defense over Rolen’s questionable status, any day.
This trade is overdue.
Too bad Oakland wouldn’t take Rolen in exchange for Dan Haren. Billy Beane usually trades his starters before they become free agents. And Haren is only due $16.25 million over the next 3 seasons.

Yeah. Too bad the Yankees won’t trade A-rod, Robinson Cano and Phil Hughes to the Twins for Jason Tyner and a player to be named later, too.
Too bad Dan Haren was ever traded to Oakland in the first place.
I hear that the Dodgers are now in the mix for Rolen.
Tim, if you can get Toni to trade me I promise to remain healthy for at least half the season. I think that would be my personal best. Please put in a good word me I don’t think I can take another dunken beating from Toni.
I like what Tony LaRussa said (you won’t often here my say that) about Rolen: “He’s got a contract to play, and we need him to play. He’s going to be treated very honestly. If he plays hard and plays as well as he can, he plays. If he doesn’t, he can sit. If he doesn’t like it, he can quit.”
This is according to an AP report posted on ESPN.com this morning.
