Shut up, Colin
September 26th, 2006
Normally on my way to work I catch Mike and Mike on ESPN. Good show. I like those guys.
Today I was a little later than usual, and so I had the misfortune to hear Colin Cowherd. I sometimes catch him over my lunch break. I’ve never been a big fan, but today I decided that he is simply unlistenable.
The entire time I was in my truck, he was talking about how New Orleans fans should go out and party because the Saints are 3-0. Throw moderation out the window — because the Saints may never be 3-0 again. That was his point. It took me all of two sentences to say it. But Cowherd kept going on and on and on — for like 10 minutes.
OK Colin, we get it. You don’t have to beat it into the ground. Shut up, already.
I was listening to the herd this morning and i was reminded again why i dont listen to it, or Jim Rome for that matter…
HowardStern (of all people) was asked one time what he thought the secret is to being a good radio personality. He replied that when he first started in radio, his goal was to be an interesting person. An older gentleman pulled him aside one day early in his career and gave him some good advice, “Don’t ttry to be interesting, just be interested in other people.” He put that into practice and it made him very successful.
Often when I’m listening to Cowherd, I think the same thing. “You’re trying too hard to be interesting. You’re too wrapped up in yourself and your own opinions.” How much more interesting his show would have been if he had asked some people around New Orleans what they thought of the game and how it influenced the city. As it is,he just comes off as radio sports halitosis. It doesn’t help that he is trying to fill the shoes of one of the greatest radio personalities of all time in Tony Kornheiser.
Colin and Jim Rome both have the same problem: too much air time to fill and not enough to say. So they resort to repeating themselves ad nauseum.
As for Kornheiser, I agree with Joel. But sadly, he has now risen to his level of incompetence—a great radio talk show host who hasn’t said anything remotely interesting or compelling on MNF.
Kornhoser is an idiot. I’d rather listen to Dennis Miller blather on than hear Tony’s inane comments. MNF is trash now. Theisman can’t pronounce names and Kornheiser won’t stop talking. Mike Tirico? Are you kidding me?
The real MNF has moved to Sunday Night on NBC with Michaels and Madden. ESPN only switched days. They didn’t improve anything.
though i have not watched mnf this year, i’ll take al michaels and mr. obvious over anyone
lj,
I agree with you that Tony is not as good on mnf. I wouldn’t go as far as you do and call him an idiot. If you ever listened to his radio show back when he was on ESPN radio, you’d probably appreciate his talent a little more.
Or maybe not, who am I kidding here?!
Joel,
I guess it’s just personal preference. I just never cared for him, even on the radio. I never liked PTI either. He comes across as sarcastic and grating. Maybe that works on the radio. It doesn’t work on MNF. And it was magnified at the Katrina bowl.
He just seems like that nerdy kid who never knew sports or played them but studied them so he would know what everyone is talking about. I’m sure he’s a nice guy. I just don’t care for his TV style or his commentaries.
For NFL games I would love to see Michaels, Madden and Summerall do all the games. As far a College I would love to hear Keith Jackson, Bob Griese, and Bob Costas team up for all the games.
Dennis Miller was a joke! Kornheiser isn’t much better, but not as annoying to me as Miller was.
I liked the old sunday night espn crew of Mike Patrick, Theisman and McGuire. I would rather hear Mike Patrick call games than anyone. I miss NFL primetime too so I’m not very happy about all the changes that have been made.
Back to the original point…I for one like Colin Cowherd. He is one of those no nonsense types that is nice to hear sometimes. So many people are so afraid of offending someone that they say very little. I respect a guy like Colin who says what he thinks.
Now, I certainly don’t agree with him all the time, but he is fun to listen to…I think.
Yeah Colin rambles sometimes, but I think I like him better than Dan Patrick. Dan gets all the big names and probably more money to do his show, so he doesn’t have to fill air by repeating himself.
If you lived in Louisville I think you would appreciate Cowherd more. The local guy who cuts in from 11-1 on ESPN is probably the worst radio talk show host I’ve ever heard. ESPN radio louisville needs to dump “the big ez”. The old GM Scot something was great, but he died earlier this year. The only other option is 790 and the Joe B and Denny show. THey talk about fishing at KY lake and how many croppies they caught. I’m venting. I better stop.
jm,
Are you kidding me? Dan Patrick not repeating himself?? One day I got out of the car after listening to him comment on the topic of the day.I got back in my car an hour and a half later and he was still ranting about the same subject. And it’s not just one day. He does that every day. I can listen to him for thirty minutes but after that, he’s run out of material.
