Stackhouse gives mom a church
August 28th, 2006
Dallas Mavericks guard Jerry Stackhouse paid to refurbish a building that will serve as a church, which his mother serves as pastor.
The building, which formerly housed a different church, replaces one that Minnie Stackhouse ran in a different neighborhood of Kinston. Her new parish is located closer to the people she hopes her ministry will reach.
“This is a special day for this church and my mother,” Jerry Stackhouse said. “She now has a place where she feels she can best manage her programs and best serve the community.”
Theological issues aside, I’d rather read about something like this than another TO story.
I’m with you, Tim, on the theological issues.
Gender issues aside, however, (and never having even met her) she’s very likely at least as qualified as some of the male clowns I’ve seen on television with “Dr.” and “Rev. ” in front of their names!
What if the woman was a lesbian? could we set aside theological issues?
what if she taught her dog how to drive?
What I’m getting at is when do we set aside theological issues?
obviously, when it’s convenient and suits our pleasure.
dude, it’s OK. Tim didn’t put his convictions on the shelf. It’s just a story.
Jason,
I know, it is a good story and I suppose it’s better that he build a church than a strip joint, but as far as the ‘clowns’ that we’ve seen on TV, why can’t we put theological issues aside then?
Why can’t we put aside theological issues aside when it comes to Benny Hinn?
Tim, it is refreshing to see a professional athlete at least trying to do something positive with their money instead of crying for more.
My favorite T.O. story is yet to be written. That will be the one that announces his retirement.
Amen Gordon!
See there…I knew you were for women pastors Tim!
I knew you were a liberal!
I think that’s the first time I’ve ever been accused of that, fox.
so why do some denoms have women pastors anyway?
Women are very important in the Body of Christ. They have gifts and abilities that are essential. Pastoring is not one of them, IMO, but her son sees the value of her work, and wants to give back.
Nice thing for a son to do, if you ask me.
Good question, Laz. Are you asking because you really don’t know? Or are you trying to pick a fight?:)
Bob is correct. The spirit of what Stack did is notable. Women are CRITICAL to many facets of the Church. But the Bible is pretty clear that pastoring is reserved for men.
Most churches went down the path of accepting women in the pastorate in the name of equality and tolerance. This is based on a flawed perception that different roles means inequality between the genders.
Tony, I ask because I don’t understand how they ordain women in the face of 1 Timothy 3, unless they ignore it because it is an ‘oppressive’ text…
so to answer your question, I really don’t know what their justification is
In my limited experience, I have found that most denominations that ordain women pastors also do not hold to a literal interpretation of Scripture, neither do they believe in inerrancy.
Gordon,
I don’t know which denominations will and will not. But the Assemblies of God is VERY conservative on every issue it seems, except they ordain women to the pastorate.
ordaining women does not make one liberal.
fox, do you know their rationale for ordaining women? Is it Gal 3:28?
the term ‘liberal’ changes with the times does it not? I’m sure that one point in time one was a ‘liberal’ for not using any other version of the Bible other than the King James…
I don’t recall using the term, “liberal”. While the AOG may be an exception on the matter of inerrancy, they are certainly an exception to the rule.
I did not mean for my remarks to be inflammatory, I am simply stating what I know to be true from my experience. Denominations such as the Episcopalian church, Methodists, CBF and others who ordain women openly question the absolute authority of scripture.
