Top recruit aims to stay grounded in Christ

January 26th, 2006

Tim Tebow, 18, was one of the nation’s top high school quarterbacks this season. He threw for 3,442 yards and 34 touchdowns and ran for 1,045 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Wow.

Next year, he’ll play for the University of Florida.

A member of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Fla., Tebow is a committed Christian from a godly family. This story from Baptist Press looks at Tebow’s life, his family and a future that is undeniably bright.

Tim Tebow is the real deal. He plays for our local high school. He doesn’t go there, because he’s homeschooled. One of the assistant coaches lives three doors down from us and I got a DVD from him showing all the highlights of Tim’s junior year, the year where he threw for like 56 touchdowns and ran for 24 more (70 touchdowns in one year!). He has been a man among boys. As a Tennessee fan I was very disappointed to see him choose the dreaded Gators. Yet, I wish him the best and hope he uses his platform to glorify Christ. He certainly has the sound foundation and supportive family. ESPN did a one hour documentary on his senior season, it ran in mid-December; if they run it again, it is very worthwhile to watch.

Back to his football skills. He is 6′2″ about 220 and run past you or through you. He can outlift anyone on the team. He’s got a shotgun arm, a winning spirit, and is tough as nails. To top it off, he’s humble and teachable. He’s basically a quarteback in a linebacker’s body.

That being said, college is a different animal than high school and Tim will have to prove himself at that level. A level, by the way, that he is already at academically. Tebow started clases in Gainesville this month and will be participating in spring practices with the Gators. Another advantage of home schooling: finish earlier!

I meant threw for 46 touchdowns, not 56.

  3. I would rather see him at Florida State, but his testimony is a blessing.
