Trades, trades, trades
July 31st, 2006A lot of wheeling and dealing in baseball over the past couple of days, as the trade deadline looms this afternoon. Yesterday we saw Bobby Abreu shipped to the New York Yankees and Ronnie Belliard to the Cardinals. Today the Tigers have acquired Sean Casey. Other rumors still circulate around Alfonso Soriano, Miguel Tejada and a host of others.
One rumor has the Cardinals sending Jason Marquis to the Mets for Aaron Heilman. I’d love to see that happen.
When it gets to be about 3:57 PM EST I’ll go to MLB.com and be clicking the “Refresh” button every two seconds to look for literal last-second deals. I love those kind.
According to MLB.com, Heilman ( along with Milledge) may be traded to the A’s in exchange for Barry Zito. I don’t know how eager the Mets are to give up a solid relief pitcher, but for the right player, they might.
I found your site through Technorati Blog Search… I am also a baseball blogger ( and a Christian), just wanted to tell you that your site is awesome!
It will be interesting to see what happens.
Welcome Zach.
New entry at Random Meanderings.
Thanks so much, Zach. Welcome to the blog.
If Walt can pick up Heilman, that would allow Wainright to slide into the rotation which would be fine by me. I like that we don’t have to watch Aaron Miles take 4 at bats a game anymore, but I hope Walt is able to pick up a solid utility player capable of playing shortstop.
See, Chris hit the crux of why I don’t like the Belliard deal - we get older, less defensive capability, with less position versatility for more money. With Belliard, we have no real backup for SS - as Belliard and Miles neither play the position.
I was not a Luna fan by ANY stretch, but he could play (marginally) anywhere. Now, we have a declining, single-position player with the only use for Miles as when we need better defense at 2B.
Fantastic.
Glad we’re on the same frequency, Jason. I posted a lot of what you said on my site last night. I don’t know if Luna would have ever been the team’s answer for an everyday second baseman somewhere down the road, but he was great in the role he filled off the bench. Sure, Belliard will be better offensively than Miles, but sacrificing bench depth was pretty silly.
Oh no, a Yankee fan…
Oh well. I guess we’re not allowed to discriminate. Welcome Zach.
NO WAY would the Mets trade Heilman for Marquis. Why would they want to do that?
They wouldn’t. Evidently some STL fans might like to see it. Marquis drives us nuts on the mound, but I like the novelty of a pitcher who is doing better as a left-handed pinch hitter than as a starting pitcher.
Wow, the Cardinals are taking a chance on Jorge Sosa. Good luck with him - he wasn’t working for us. I did see him in a game last year that I went to, and he really looked great. I think his arm fell off during the offseason. I really do hope he can turn his season around.
Scott, he will be great in STL…………..as a hitter.
Doesn’t he have THREE home runs already this year? He and Marquis will be a great right/left tandem as pinch hitters off the bench. Wait…….you say they are PITCHERS? Hmmm……..
