Yankees may pursue Suppan
October 31st, 2006According to a story in the New York Post, the Yankees may attempt to sign Jeff Suppan.
Suppan, who is 106-101 with a 4.61 ERA, made $4 million this past season when he was 12-7. Since the free agent class of pitchers isn’t deep, Suppan could command $8 to $10 million a year.
If the Yankees want to pay Suppan $8 to $10 million a year, they can have him. He’ll end up winning 10-12 games for them, with an ERA of about 5.00.
Someone count how few characters it takes for me to reply to this post.
“Bye, Jeff.”
This is what free agency is all about, especially for starting pitchers: Have one notable year and make a fortune out of it.
I can see it now. Steinbrenner was watching Suppan against the Mets in game 3. Jeff shocks everyone by going deep.
George turns to his assistant and asks, “Did I hear that McGarvey announcer guy say he’ll be a free agent?”
“Yes, sir. McCarver did say that…several times. Also hinted he might want to head west since he’s from California.”
“Well, I got news for McCovey, he’s headed east. Sign him, whatever it takes.”
“Yes, sir. You mean, McCarver, sir.”
“Whatever. He’s got a nice swing.”
“But, sir, our pitchers don’t have to hit. We’re in the AL, we have the DH.”
“When we’re in the World Series next year he’ll have to hit. Sign him!”
“Yes, sir!”
you’d think the Yanks would have learned their lesson with Pavano…
Brett, hilarious… McGarvey…
It would be great if he could stay, but we have other options. I doubt he’ll be that good in NY anyway. Dave duncan has done wonders for him, like he has for so many others, and when you remove that…I bet he becomes old Jeff.
For 8-10 million he will fit right in with Jaret Wright, Carl Pavano, and the Used to be Big Unit–
Does anyone remeber the Seinfield episode that he trades George for Chicken?
